'The Wrestler' Director Takes On Wolverine?

September 1st 2010. Mr Bang, Flicks.co.nz 'The Wrestler' Director Takes On Wolverine?

Darren Aronofsky is being lined up to direct X-Men: Wolverine 2.

The Wrestler director is apparently being considered by bosses at 20th Century Fox, who can't decide between him and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse filmmaker David Slade.

The movie – which will see Hugh Jackman reprise his role as the title character in the superhero action movie based on Marvel Comic characters – is due to start being made early next year. The character is rumoured to be venturing to Japan.

While bosses decide who will oversee the project, Jackman is said to have been meeting with both prospective directors.

Deadline reports: "Slade, who just directed the summer hit The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, met over the weekend with Hugh Jackman on location where he is shooting Real Steel for DreamWorks. Aronofsky has also been talking with Jackman, and they have a good relationship that dates back to The Fountain, when Jackman stepped in after Brad Pitt dropped out. Jackman holds a lot of clout in the decision."

The Time Traveler's Wife director Robert Schwentke had been in the running for the position, but dropped out earlier this month.

Aside from the Jackson connection, this sequel to a critically-panned spin-off would seem an odd choice for Aronofksy, known for being a fiercely independent director of arthouse fare like Pi and Requiem for a Dream. His next film, Black Swan, a psychosexual thriller starring Natalie Portman, opens in New Zealand on January 27.
