The first episode, directed by Scorsese, was the most expensive pilot show ever made - costing $US 18 million. The series is inspired by real-life gangster/policitian Nucky Johnson and the non-fiction book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City by Nelson Johns.

The series gets better and more engrossing with time, but it takes more than a few episodes for it to clear its throat, establish its bona fides and fall into storytelling stride.
